Monitoring for a Cause: How Climate Change Impacts Freshwater Organisms in Southern Appalachia

Climate change and subsequent shifts in weather events are changing aquatic ecosystems across the world. Streams drying up in droughts, floods overflowing rivers and displacing freshwater organisms, climbing temperatures making environments unsuitable for native species, and other stressors are all changing key habitats and shaping populations in impacted regions like Southern Appalachia. Michael Gangloff, Professor of Biology at Appalachian State University, has been monitoring waterways and freshwater taxa under duress in the southeastern US for 27 years, measuring abundance, size, and condition of local taxa as well as quantifying changes to physical habitat conditions through long-term monitoring at established sites.

Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust: Community Focused Watershed Monitoring and Management in Maine

The Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust is one of many land trusts across the US dedicated to monitoring and maintaining natural resources for future generations by expanding and improving current protections based on data and community needs. Such efforts are expansive, including watershed monitoring as well as education and outreach initiatives that keep communities informed. In order to keep all of these efforts staffed, the Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust relies on volunteers to collect data. Sarah Gladu, Director of Community Science for the Coastal Rivers Conservation Trust, manages a group of nearly 100 volunteers, coordinating monitoring efforts across the Damariscotta-Pemaquid region.

Monitoring Aquatic Ecosystems: How Science Drives Waterway Management in Northwest Georgia

The University of Georgia is home to multiple labs that focus on monitoring aquatic ecosystems and organisms across the state. The River Basin Center connects these monitoring efforts with external partners, including government agencies and NGOs, to inform management and restoration of the state’s waterways. Phillip Bumpers is a Postdoctoral Associate in the Rosemond lab and the Wenger lab at the Odum School of Ecology and an affiliate of the River Basin Center. An aquatic ecologist, Bumpers’ research focuses on quantifying how environmental variability shapes aquatic ecosystems and understanding the drivers of these trends. Long-Term Monitoring in the Chautauqua Lake Watershed

With a widely developed shoreline, Chautauqua Lake experiences influxes of non-point source pollution that have historically impacted the health of the lake. The Chautauqua Lake Association (CLA) has been monitoring the lake for over two decades, reporting on changes that have occurred over the years. A pair of local lake advocates, Jane and Doug Conroe, have lived on the lake for over 40 years and have played an important role in establishing monitoring programs and facilitating consistent data collection throughout the watershed. Doug has been involved with the Chautauqua Lake Association (CLA) since the pair moved to the area in 1980, and is currently serving as the Executive Director.
