Overview
The YSI EXO3s represents an advanced sonde platform that offers a wide range of capabilities to those dedicated to monitoring natural aquatic environments such as oceans, estuaries, rivers, lakes, and groundwater. With a highly efficient power management platform, robust construction and chemistry-free anti-fouling system, EXO allows accurate data collection for up to 90 days between service intervals.
Multi-Port Water Quality Sonde
The EXO3 sonde includes four sensor ports and a central anti-fouling wiper option. Sensor (not included with sonde purchase) parameters include:
- Temperature
- Conductivity
- Depth
- Dissolved oxygen
- pH
- ORP
- Total algae (phycocyanin or phycoerythrin along with chlorophyll)
- Turbidity
- Fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM)
- Rhodamine WT
- UV nitrate
- ISE ammonium
- ISE nitrate
- ISE chloride
Outputs Four Calculated Parameters
- Salinity
- Specific conductance
- Total dissolved solids (TDS)
- Total suspended solids (TSS)
Onboard Signal Processing and Memory
All EXO sensors are digital sensors with onboard signal processing and memory. Built-in sensor diagnostic and calibration data allow users to calibrate multiple sensors in one sonde and distribute them to various other sondes in the field. Wet-mateable connectors allow for swaps in wet conditions, while active port monitoring automatically detects each sensor and verifies operation.

Texas’s Gulf Coast Demands More Research: USGS Scientists are Answering the Call
Along the thousands of miles of ocean coastline cradling the American South lies the popular beach town of Galveston, Texas. While tourists flock to the sandy shorelines and historic piers, another world exists right alongside them–one full of scientists who are adamantly monitoring the Gulf of America, hoping to understand this economically and biologically vital water body amid changing environmental conditions. Contributing to this work is the US Geological Survey’s (USGS) Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center (OTWSC). Joined from two separate state centers in 2020, but tracing its rudimentary roots back to the late 1800s, the center has been studying and measuring water in the region for over a century.
New Buoy Boosts White Lake’s Water Quality Monitoring and Conservation
White Lake in Western Michigan is a vestige of North America’s glacial past, and gets its name from an interpretation of the Indian, “Wabish-Sippe,” meaning the river with white clay. The twin towns of Whitehall and Montague, which nestle on White Lake’s shore, have shared a close connection with the lake since their foundation–from the growth of the lumbering industry, to industrialization, the expansion of tourism, and most recently, environmental protection. The White Lake Association (WLA) was founded in 1988 by residents concerned about proposed development at the lake’s northern end.
Building Reliable Systems: Hydroelectric Dam Monitoring in Western Pennsylvania
Hydroelectric dams are a source of renewable energy, and many have taken the place of fossil fuel reliance across the United States. While they provide green energy to the grid, they also impact the environment above and below the dam. In order to protect these habitats and mitigate any potential harm, hydroelectric dam operators monitor water quality conditions above and below the dam to ensure conditions meet ecosystem needs. Eagle Creek Renewable Energy has several hydroelectric plants positioned throughout Pennsylvania, and each is managed and monitored by a team of professionals. One of these managers is Craig Goldinger, a regional manager with Eagle Creek Renewable Energy in Western Pennsylvania.
YSI EXO3s: The Latest in Water Quality Monitoring
The YSI EXO3s offers the latest in multi-parameter water quality monitoring equipment that has a comprehensive list of smart sensors. With an external power source, this sonde is a cost-effective, compact EXO that has the same capabilities as the EXO3 . The sonde is built to last with resilient materials and backed with vigorous testing. The device has five ports for available YSI EXO smart sensors or central wiper. It seamlessly integrates with a data logger to collect and push valuable data to the cloud for access from a PC or mobile device. This small sonde is exceptional for both sampling and continuous monitoring applications.
